Why You Need a Coach – II of II – Business Coaching

Achieving success is not always as simple as it seems and success is not a straight line to the desired goal but rather a winding path with twists and turns, pitfalls and uphills. Astute home business entrepreneurs understand this as well as the concept that success is achieved not entirely on their own but often with the help of a dedicated professional business coach.

Are you growing a home business that needs a little oomph?   Does your plan for your business include inviting an objective professional to listen, observe and elicit successful strategies? Do you have a clear idea of what you’d like to accomplish in the long run, but feel you need a neutral party to address where you’re strong and where you need to do a little work?  If you answered yes to any of the above, you would benefit from working with a professional business coach.

Business coaches can be your best professional buddy in these sorts of challenges as you make your company as productive, customer-responsive and as profitable as you want it to be. And the phrase “as you want it to be” is the secret to working with a business coach.  Professional business coaches are trained to bring about client-generated solutions and strategies.

So knowing what you want is crucial.   Once your goals are established, you and your business coach can brainstorm ideas together.  Next, you’ll both come up with a workable plan.  After that, you and your business coach will discuss how to implement the plan.  Sound like a plan? Here are a few questions and answers that hone in on what a business coach can do for your home business.

Q.  I’m all over the place with ideas. I’m afraid my business coach will lose patience with me after we try six or seven different approaches to problem resolution.  Is this fear warranted?

A. Don’t worry about your coach bailing out on you.  Your coach will stick with you until you find the perfect solution to your problem or problems.  The only way to find out what works is to throw a lot of ideas out and see if any of them stick.  Every mistake brings you closer to your actual solution.  Also, remember that you’re better off attacking the project with a trained, knowledgeable “someone else”.  As collaborating is part of your partnership, you’ll get to hear valuable new viewpoints.

Q.  How do I know if I need therapy instead of coaching?  Perhaps my business problems—I can’t seem to get organized–stem from the chaos in my home of origin.

A. Let’s see. Coaching supports growth and development in all areas. In business, as in personal arenas, growth is always forward-looking; it doesn’t delve into what happened in your family of origin.  But…and this is a big “but”…If you are in pain and need someone to act as a sounding board, you could look towards appointing a personal life coach ( see Why You Need a Coach – Part I of II ) or if medically required  to look towards therapy .  (There are over a hundred approaches to therapy, and all include counseling and empowering tactics.)

Professional business coaching, on the other hand, will not focus on how past hurts negatively impacted emotional functioning of the present. The outcome might result in an improved mood, but this isn’t what is aimed for. Coaching creates action plans.  It also strives to instil accountability and follow-through.

Q:  Looked at from a broader scale, what else can a business coach do for my business and career goals?

A.  It depends on what you want her or him to bring to the table. A coach can mentor you, consult with you and train you. Or you may simply need a business coach to help you dust off your confidence, talents and resources. They can do that well, too.

A business coach will help you “Roto-Rooter” blockages that are holding you back, as well as help you develop your infrastructure. He or she will work with you to train an effective sales staff, help you arrive at powerful marketing strategies, unleash and empower your sense of potential, and increase general productivity.  A business coach can be a very important change management tool for your home business. Once you’re determined to take decisive steps towards extraordinary achievements, the sky’s the limit…with the assistance of a professional business coach.
