Why You Need a Coach – Part I of II

Most successful people, CEO’s of large corporations and business owners no longer consider a personal development coach a luxury but rather a necessity.

Many of us in the business of helping people to change for the better have come to the realization that, unless someone is willing to change their belief systems, there’s no way they’re going to see their way clear to personal growth and transformation–not even with well-intentioned, expert help.  No amount of compelling logic or high-pressure tactic will work until and if the person herself or himself has had enough and says: “It’s time!”

But when that time of personal growth does come, how awesome for the person who’s standing on the brow of a hill, as it were, to see…there, in the distance…a figure marching towards them, white flag held aloft, with the help they need!  That’s the job of a coach.

Let’s face it.  We all need support.  Especially in personal growth areas including areas in your day-to-day life or career where you feel as if you are stuck, It might be in starting a new business, feeling fear and self doubt not knowing how to move forward, It could be a need in your relationships, It could be that you are trying to identify your purpose, have lost sense of who you are and who you are  meant to be, for what ever reason that’s exactly where coaching can make all the difference.

In this, the first of two series, we’re going to examine ways in which a personal development coach can help you achieve personal growth.  We’ll be doing this via a Question and Answer format. (In the next section, Part 2  we’ll talk about the phenomenal way in which a business can be benefited by using a coach.)

Q.  I know exactly where I need help. It’s the discipline factor with me.  I just need an accountability partner…someone on whom I can call or e-mail if I find myself not doing what I set out to do. I can’t expect a coach to do that for me, can I?

A.  Why not? That’s precisely where they’ll jump right in and help you dig yourself out of the fox hole!  You see, coaches are geared up to “rescue” you from mistakes by providing support that will help you enhance what you already have.  They’re standing by to help you achieve greatness in all you accomplish.  What better way to do that than to help you stay accountable for a, b or c (you name it). So sign one up, and go for it!

Q. What I really need is a partner.  I’m good at coming up with these whiz-bang concepts but after that, I can’t seem to get motivated. Does a transformational coach or personal development coach help with that?

A.  You bet!  The International Coaching Federation (ICF), a trusted umbrella group that oversees coaching practices, defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”.   Personal development coach-partners assist you to create change.  It’s the ultimate one-on-one buddy system.  Think of a coach as a portable therapist!

Q.  But I want the solution to be mine, not my coach’s.  How do I make sure that’s the case?

A. It will be all yours!  Personal development coaches help you brainstorm specific ideas.  They act like a tour guide through your own mind!  No, they don’t know your mind better than you do, but they work hard to discover, clarify and align with what you want to achieve.  Nothing more and certainly nothing less.

Q. OK, so it sounds like a coach is someone who will take me seriously when I’ve decided to devote real time and energy to making substantial changes in my life.  I just have one more question.  What does a coach do, exactly, to get the ball rolling?

A. Good question!  A coach will ask you questions to get you thinking about your outcome, where you want to be.A coach is trained to assimilate information, to observe and to tailor his or her approach to what they perceive to be your unique needs in your area of personal growth.   They will not offer you solutions; instead, they are looking for you to bring these solutions out in the open…in your own inimitable way.  Once you have put your cards on the table, your coach will pick up the signals and help you develop a winning strategy.

Next time, we’ll discuss how a business coach can address your strengths and weaknesses.

Really enjoyed…Why You Need a Coach – Part I of II. A coach can help facilitate the development of ideas as well as provide support. To often family and friends become “yes” people rather than challenging us to evolve to the next level.

Great topic Brenda! Everyone along this journey we call life, needs guidance, encouragement, motivation…just to keep us on track sometimes. To help us set & achieve our goals, and there really is no better way than using the services of a good coach!

Afterall, if an elite sports person has a coach to help them perform at their peak, why shouldn’t we have a coach to help us to be the best that we can be in our lives???
