Have YOU Been Duped By The “ABOUT ” Page Myth?

It’s that time of the week again, time to send out your weekly “Finding Your Voice” newsletter and fantabulous updates. I love this time of the week where I get to share stuff with you.What have you been up to? Yes, I really want to know so let me know in the comment box, tell me what wins you have had over the past week, what new insights have you learned or any frustrations that you might have had – I want to hear all about them.

You see there’ is nothing worse than one way communication and I am sure that you must have heaps to share – so go, on scroll down to the comment box and leave me a short message even if it’s to tell me; [you appreciate receiving these updates in your inbox] 😎 Over the past week I have been invited to speak to a whole bunch of businesswomen who are have started out in business or taking their business to the next level.

Whilst chatting to the organizer, I asked her where she heard about me ( if you’re in business it is always good to track where your referrals come from, or where people have heard of you. ) in this instance it was Facebook – Whoohoo — don’t you love the power of social media. She had seen me comment on a friends status update, decided to take a look at my profile, which led her to my About page on my blog. Need less to say, something captured her attention and the rest is history. So why am I telling you this? Simply because if you have a website you should also have an “About”  page – get this though, the About page is not what every thinks it should be.

As the most visited page on your website (visitors are curious) it’ is VERY IMPORTANT to remember that you can use your about page to connect the heart of your reader, so instead of your about page being all about you, make it about them , your client, your visitor — What can you do for them that will solve their most pressing problem drawing from your experience, life or story that will connect with them? Simple, isn’t it, yet most people still think that the about page should be all about them and they go on and on, listing their entire life story and endless qualifications – Don’t feel bad I did the same, until my coach educated me on the art of emotional direct selling Let me share a little secret (and it might not be one that you want to hear) but truth be told NO-ONE really wants to know about you or your qualifications. That’s it – Simple Truth.

What they really want is to discover whether you have a common interest they can connect with. Your readers want to know what you can do for them.

In other words they are tuned to the WIIFM [what’s in it for me] radio station. So while you may want to saturate your readers with your awesomeness and well-deserved achievements, rather consider this;

Write your about page to attract attention, to connect with your readers heart, provide a little info about yourself so they do know a little about you, but add in a big chunk on how you can serve them.

I ‘d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on this. What is one thing you will do today that could change the way you interact with your readers. Let me know in the comment box below and remember when you leave your suggestions and comments, you’re serving a wider audience and helping a whole lot of other people who stop off on this page.

    Love learning more about you Brenda. Went straight to your ‘About’ page for a gander after reading this post. I am very keen to ‘share’ your blog article with fellow Founding Mums on my Like Page (www.fb.me/TheFoundingMums) as you evidently live our motto “Helping Mums Get Down To Business”. In fact I’m now wondering whether I can entice you to start a Founding Mums’ chapter in Tasmania!?! 🙂
    I’m also curious, what songs would be on your playlist for all those tuned to the WIIFM radio station? Or what songs have inspired you?

    This is so timely, Brenda, as I’m re-vamping my website. I had no idea the About page is the most visited page. I don’t have an “about” tab on my site, but I will after the revamp!
    Thank you.
