Lets get back to basics.
When I first started out in my home business I spent very little time identifying my exact target market or ideal client as they are often referred too.
I scrambled around in the dark for months thinking that I had to be and have everything for everyone.
How ignorant I was.
I later started realizing that I was pretty much a generalist, doing a bit of that and a bit of this but not really getting into detail with anything.
It was on one of those webinar thingies that I kept on hearing of this “The Riches are in the Niches”
For my business to become hugely successful I would need to start specializing (niching) in a certain field or area. I like to think of a “niche “ as a specialized service or product presented to a select group of people who have a specific need for what you have to offer. An analogy that I like to use is that of a general practitioner and a surgeon. You would not go to a general practitioner if you wanted to have plastic surgery or a heart transplant – heaven forbid, you would look for and engage the services of the best plastic surgeon or heart surgeon to provide you with the specific specialized services that he has to offer.
So why then would it be any different in your or my business for that matter?
As soon as you start to niche you also start to become known as an the expert in your field and are soon identified as the “go to person” because your ideal client knows that you have the solutions to their specific problem.
It also means that you are able to get really specific in your marketing. Once you have a niche that is clearly defined and you have a market that is an ‘ inch wide and a mile deep’ this means that you know exactly what solution your clients needs and how to reach them. Knowing this allows you to develop a marketing strategy, message and media match.
So here are 3 points to consider when considering your niche.
1.) Your ideal client has got to want what you have to offer.
2.) Your ideal client has got to want to spend money on it.
3.) Your ideal client has to congregate somewhere so that you can ask them to spend money on it.
There are some wonderful benefits of defining your niche, lets take a look at a few of the benefits.
1.) The more defined you become in your niche the higher you can price your products or services. ( experts status claims higher rates )
2.) Contradictory to what we believe, the narrower the group or body of people you are going to target, that have a specific interest in what you do, the more sales success you will have.
3.) Becoming an expert in your chose field will elevate your status.
4.) Identifying you niche will allow you to get to know the person who has the problem, who they are, what their desires are and what their fears are.
5.) Having a good relationship with your client will also allow you to adapt, a change and tweak your product or service effectively.
6.) The more you help others overcome their problems and reach their dreams, the more your goals and dreams will be taken care of.
So, if you have been heading blindly in a direction with out identifying your niche and ideal client, my suggestion would be to STOP, and spend some time on defining this. You will be surprised at the difference it makes to your small business opportunity.

I agree completely about finding your target niche and having a much better response from it – It’s hard to believe if you have no marketing background, but was one of the biggest eye openers for me!
Great content as usual Brenda,
Nicky

Hi Brenda,
The more targeted your niche, the more targeted your audience will be.

Thanks Pat , Yes there are so many people who are looking for new opportunities
to make provision for their retirement in 10 -15 years.
Network Marketing is something a that can be done easily
and effectively helping many people achieve that goal.
Brenda,
This post got me to thinking that maybe I’ve been a generalist for too long and need to become more focused on my specific niche.
I appreciate the insight.
